the best idea? what would you advise president obama to do right now? >> oh, gosh. that's a tough question, because susan rice is being unfairly pillared for what happened here. at the same time the state department is primarily responsible for the breakdown in security. the failure to provide adequate security to our ambassador in libya. that investigation is clearly something that mrs. clinton is going to have to reckon with. in a choice right now where the middle east is aflame and where iran ultimately becomes the greatest diplomatic and potential military challenge that the united states faces, it's clear that the president's going to need sure footing with a secretary of state who has the stature and respect around the world and by the way with congress. i really feel na perhaps senator kerry in the end is going to probably be that person who has that -- carrying that stature and knowledge. yet, at the same time be perfectly frank. what is happening to susan rice is unfair and inappropriate. she doesn't deserve to have a reputation tarnished. she was the last person in the w

right now, there's a number of things that should truly be frightening democrats. democrats control the white house, they have a larger majority in the senate. there is certainly some onus on president obama, the white house and senate majority leader harry reid to show that the democratic party can govern in a moment of great fiscal crisis. so i think there's a tremendous amount of pressure to go around here. while the conventional wisdom is that the president is in the driver's seat, i think that there's plenty of leverage to be had on capitol hill. jon: and republicans are not likely going to want to give a whole lot on tax increases. >> there's no doubt. and that's why you sort of look for that line in the sand and whether or not it's going to be drawn on capitol hill. it's not too early to think about 2014 for senators who may be up for re-election in 2014 and even for members of the house. it's never too early in washington to think about your next election, so i don't think there's any doubt that members of both parties are going to potentially be looking over their shoulder at p
